GUY CRESCENT (1920 - 1996)

Hit by the Poliomyelitis at the age of three months, Guy Crescent dedided from an early year to struggle against the desease. He accomplished at a very young age a re-education of new muscles just to be able to walk.

The handicap that he sublimated throughout his life forged a quite exceptional character and determination which he brought to the fore, in particular during the war, when, despite his condition, he enrolled in the Resistance.

In 1950, destiny brought him a new and very cruel blow with the disappearance in an accident of two of his children, small boys aged two and three years.

Supporting his family with a tremendous zest for life, which no doubt his condition helped him acquire, he threw himself intensely into his work, building up and developing the Calberson group that he had recently joined and which he was chairman of for many successful years. In addition, he became involved in a number of other areas where he always worked to help others, encouraging people around him to surpass themselves.

It was in the context of the association "Polio Plus" that he launched, with the Rotary club, a global prevention and vaccination campaign, continuing to help poliomyelitis sufferers, his "brothers", whom he encouraged and advised.

He also interested himself in the victims of modern life, those that find it difficult to choose to live rather than destroy themselves and who, after losing their grip, attach themselves to "SOS FRIENDSHIP", a humanitarian organisation that he managed and developed energetically for a number of years.

His enthusiasm for sport, an activity that he could never practice, and in particular football, prompted him, among other things, to create Paris Saint-Germain and organise the World Winter Games for Physically Handicapped persons.

To help reintegrate young drug addicts into professional life, he had the idea of enlisting the help of well-known successful sporting personalities, creating the "Michel Platini Foundation", which helped many drug addicts find employment and regain a sense of dignity. Many of the other initiatives designed to help others cannot be cited here as they are so numerous and diverse. One can however mention the association "Banque de la Vie-Recherche Cancer" that Guy Crescent helped bring to life without realising yet that this illness would later carry him away.

This exceptional life, whose many rich facets can hardly be appreciated in so few words, can be resumed in terms of a refusal to accept adversity and fatality thanks to incredible energy and unfailing perseverance. But this is not all, as mention should also be made of his kindliness and humanity as well as a profound capacity to listen to others, appreciate their difficulties and thereby consecrate all his energy and tremendous generosity to helping them.

The Guy Crescent Prize Association who was integrated to the Geodis Foundation in 2009, honoured and beared witness to the exemplary character and excellence of this extraordinary man who marked all those who had the privilege of meeting him with an indelible stamp.
The "Prix Guy Crescent" awarded by the foundation perpetuate this memory in this way.
